KMFA and Sightlines are proud to present the New Music Mixer, a monthly happy hour series for classical music nerds and newbies alike at Friends and Allies Brewing. Join us for our next event, a special panel discussion as part of Big Medium's East Austin Studio Tour featuring composer Yevgeniy Sharlat and multimedia artist Yuliya Lanina. They will be discuss their work together and the parallels between music and visual art. Sightlines' Jeanne Claire van Ryzin will host. Enjoy $1 off locally brewed pints and mingle with folks who love new music!

The presentation portion of the evening will begin at 6:00 p.m.

Parking

If the main parking lot is full, additional parking is available behind the brewery. Turn in off of Springdale close to Airport at Dimension Gallery and go all the way back past Brothers Produce to the back lot. There is a paved walkway around the right side of the building to the front entrance.

Presenter Details

Yevgeniy Sharlat has composed music for orchestra, chamber ensembles, solo, theater, dance, mechanical sculptures, animations, and film. He has written string quartets for Kronos, Aeolus, Aizuri and Amphion Quartets. Other chamber music has been played by the NOW Ensemble, Hub New Music, Seattle Chamber Players, Trio Séléné, Quodlibet Ensemble, Le Train Bleu, and many others. Orchestral music has been performed by Kremerata Baltica, Seattle Symphony, Hartford Symphony, Mikkeli City Orchestra (Finland), and Chamber Orchestra Kremlin.

He was among the composers commissioned by the Kronos Quartet for its “Fifty for the Future” project. His RIPEFG appeared on Aizuri Quartet’s Grammy-nominated album “Blueprints” and was hailed as “startlingly compelling” by the San Diego Union-Tribune. A piano quartet, commissioned by Astral Artistic Services, was described as “one of the most compelling works to enter the chamber music literature in some time” by the Philadelphia Inquirer. He collaborated with prominent choreographers Lar Lubovitch, Donald Byrd, and C. Eule, as well as a renowned dancer Lil Buck. His arrangement of Chopin’s both piano concertos were performed by Kremerata Baltica with Daniil Trifonov as soloist at Carnegie Hall in 2018.

Mr. Sharlat was the recipient of the 2006 Charles Ives Fellowship from American Academy of Arts and Letters and a 2007 Rome Prize finalist; other honors include a Fromm Music Foundation Commission (2010) to write for the Viney-Grinberg Piano Duo, fellowships from MacDowell (2005, 2007) and Yaddo (2010), and ASCAP’s Morton Gould (2003), Boosey & Hawkes (1997), and Leiber & Stoller (1997) awards. 

Born in Moscow, Russia, Mr. Sharlat came to the United States as a refugee at age 16. He teaches music composition at The University of Texas at Austin.

 

Yuliya Lanina is a multimedia artist whose work ranges from paintings and robotic sculptures to video and performance. She creates alternate realities in her works—ones based on sexuality, femininity, fetishism, and identity.

She has performed and exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally, including SXSW Interactive, Seoul Art Museum, SIGGRAPH Asia, 798 Beijing Biennial (China), Cleveland Institute of Art, Museum Ludwig (Germany), Creative Tech Week (NYC), Fusebox Festival (Austin), Blanton Museum of Art (Austin), and Moscow Museum of Modern Art. 

Her work has been featured in Brooklyn Rail, Houston Press, Glasstire, Art Review, Bloomberg News, Austin-American Statesman, Australian Art Review, SightLines, NYArts Magazine, ART on AIR.com/MOMA, PS 1, Bejing Today and can be found in several national and international private and corporate collections. She was listed among the “top 10 artists in NYC now” by Revolt Magazine and received an honorable citation from the New York State Assembly in 2013.  

Lanina’s collaborative projects were performed at the New Museum Festival (New York), San Diego Museum of Art (CA), Edinburgh Fringe (Scotland), National Museum the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania (Lithuania), and National Sawdust (Brooklyn, NY).

Lanina's honors include fellowships and scholarships from Headlands Art Center, Yaddo Colony, Marble House Project, NY Studio Gallery, The Puffin Foundation Grant, I-Park, and Award of Excellence in the Manhattan Arts International Competition (New York City).
