This performance features a blend of contemporary and classic works, capturing the essence of summer. The evening opens with Carlos Simon's stirring "Amen! ", a dynamic and soulful exploration of faith and resilience. George Gershwin's beloved opera Porgy and Bess closes the program, featuring iconic tunes such as "Summertime" and "I Got Plenty o' Nuttin'," transporting audiences to the vibrant streets of 1920s Charleston, South Carolina, in a timeless tale of love and redemption.

Founded in 1911, the Austin Symphony Orchestra is Austin’s oldest performing arts group. The ASO offers a complete season of musical and educational programming. Masterworks Series concerts include eight concert pairs running monthly September through May in the state-of-the-art Joe R. & Teresa Lozano Long Center for the Performing Arts. Our season also features the Sarah & Ernest Butler Pops Series which features 4 concerts also at the Long Center, and the Halloween Children’s Concert for the entire family. James C. Armstrong Youth Educations Programs include ASO Tuneful Tales, Young People’s Concerts, High School Concert Tour and a variety of other school programs.
