HAI ZHENG & FRIENDS FACULTY CELLO RECITAL

AN EVENING OF MUSIC HONORING RESILIENCE, MEMORY, AND HOPE

Saturday, January 31 at 7:30 p.m. | Alma Thomas Theatre

Faculty Concert featuring Hai Zheng (cello), Dr. Jeanne Hourez (piano), and Dr. Bruce Cain (baritone)

It is our privilege to present the world premiere of Jason Hoogerhyde’s new composition for cello and piano, commissioned by Hai Zheng with the generous support of Mr. and Mrs. Donald and Diane Loewe. This evocative new piece explores contrasts of shadow and light, reminding us of the beauty that can emerge even from life’s most difficult passages.

Alongside this exciting premiere, the program also features Ernest Bloch’s heartfelt Prayer, Supplication, Jewish Song and Méditation Hébraïque; selections from Donald McCullough’s moving Holocaust Cantata: Songs from the Camps -No. 7 The Train and No. 11 Tempo di Tango; and John Williams’ Elegie for Cello and the unforgettable Theme from Schindler’s List. Together, these works invite reflection, remembrance, and renewal, offering moments of deep sorrow, profound resilience, and enduring hope.

  • Southwestern University is one of only a handful of undergraduate liberal arts universities that support a separate school of fine arts. We believe in enrolling students who are engaged learners, ready to grow both in and out of the classroom, and eager to explore new regions of thought and creative expression. A Sarofim major is coupled with an engaging and diverse curriculum.

Our programs lead to the BA in studio artart historymusic, and theatre, as well as the BFA in Studio Art and the BMus in music.  We also provide programs to minor in architecture and design. The Architecture & Design Studies minor has been discontinued and is only available to students currently in the program. All are designed to prepare graduates for a variety of paths in and out of the arts: teaching, professional work, or graduate school.
